Kwabotwe Centre of Sports Excellence

Background

The importance of sports in the holistic development of a nation’s human capital and its overall growth cannot be overstated. Sports have therefore been an integral component of Ghana’s national development agenda, with particular emphasis on youth development.

Participation in sports ensures that the general population remains fit and healthy. It boosts self-esteem, reduces stress, improves sleep quality, and fosters the development of teamwork and leadership skills. Additionally, sports instill important values such as patience, discipline, and perseverance.

Cape Coast has long served as the bedrock of Ghana’s second-cycle education and talent development. Renowned institutions such as Mfantsipim School, St. Augustine’s College, Holy Child School, Wesley Girls’ High School, Adisadel College, Ghana National College, and Aggrey Memorial A.M.E. Zion Senior High School have produced some of Ghana’s finest sports personalities.

Unfortunately, despite this proven national potential, the sports infrastructure available to schools in Cape Coast is woefully inadequate.

In response to this gap, the Mfantsipim Old Boys Association (MOBA) initiated the construction of the Kwabotwe Centre of Sports Excellence in 2020 at Mfantsipim. The Centre is intended to serve as a shared sports resource facility for the cluster of schools in Cape Coast and its surrounding communities.

The Centre is envisioned as a world-class, integrated sports complex equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for football, basketball, athletics, volleyball, swimming, and handball.

As outlined in the master plan, the project will be implemented in several phases.
